Born in Michigan and raised in southeastern PA, Michael Wagner spent nearly a decade working in physical therapy before his passion for filmmaking grew from an artistic side hustle and fully into a second career. Over the last 25 years, he’s freelanced far and wide in the film industry, primarily in camera departments up and down the east coast. As an independent filmmaker, Mike has set loose upon the world dozens of narrative short films, music videos, commercials, and documentaries. His main concentrations are in the crafts of directing and cinematography, with additional interests in production design and cinema studies.
Mike’s creative work focuses on the transformative power of nature and the environment, and often feature subjects or characters who exist on the fringes of their communities and their various struggles to navigate those worlds as outsiders. His films and screenplays have won numerous awards and recognition, and have been selected to screen at regional, national, and international film festivals.
Mike graduated from Florida State University in 2005 with a Master of Fine Arts degree in Narrative Film Production. The conservatory’s accelerated production schedule enabled him to experience nearly every film department and crew position, while he concentrated on directing and camera. He continues to explore filmmaking and evolve as a visual storyteller with such an inclusive approach.
Mike lives on the outskirts of the Lehigh Valley, PA with his talented wife, Angie, and a menagerie of dogs, cats, horses, and other critters.
An omelet bearing the face of Christ served at a forgotten, southern truck stop… a beleaguered corporate intern moonlighting as a dominatrix… an intense young intellectual sentenced to a mental health facility, obsessed with improving the minds around him.
Such are the offbeat elements and odd characters that exist in many of my films. I’ve long been attracted to characters and stories that linger on the fringes of societies, families, or communities. Prep Talk gave me the opportunity to tell a gentler version of that story, with Kevin as the tagalong little brother trying to figure out a way to fit in the right way.
Susan provided the original story and script, which we further developed together into a film production as co-Directors. We split the directing duties pretty cleanly and the collaboration worked out well. Susan deftly handled the performances and the young cast, while I handled the shot design and visual storytelling, doubling as the Director of Photography.
We firmly believe in a collaborative approach to filmmaking, so we feel fortunate to have had the chance to work with such a great crew, comprised mainly of our TV/Film students from DeSales University. The whole team hopes our audiences will enjoy the time they get to spend with these four kids on their epic hike to the reservoir. We certainly enjoyed taking them there.
