Director Biography - Evelien van Raaij

Evelien van Raaij was born in the Den Bosch area of The Netherlands in 1990. She learned to be a camera operator at the Koning Willem 1 College in Den Bosch and interned at the local network Boschtion Media, where she worked as camera operator, editor and producer.

In 2010, she started her education at Enschede's Saxion University, following the Media, Information and Communication course. A passion for filmmaking made her apply for a special minor program that gave her the chance to stretch beyond the boundaries of her education’s regular courses and produce, write and direct her own short feature. The result is District 24, vol. 1 (a.k.a. De Schoonmaakster, vol. 1), which is her first director's credit.

Director Statement

I was very happy to be allowed to make this film, but it was frightening too. We got the approval at the last minute, so all of a sudden, it was really happening. I had to start writing the screenplay right away.

I felt it was really important to have a film with a strong female lead character. Some of her insecurities mirror mine. Can you live up to the task set before you? It even mirrored some of the challenges of filmmaking!
