Director Biography - JOHANNA PYYKKÖ

Johanna Pyykkö graduated from The Norwegian Film School with a bachelor’s degree in film directing in 2016. She has made several award-winning shorts, which have been screened at international film festivals around the world. Pyykkö is also working as a screenwriter and has written episodes for the second season of the critically acclaimed TV-drama series Heimebane (Home ground - Screened at Berlinale TV Series 2018), for Norwegian public broadcaster NRK. She is currently developing two feature films and a drama series, and has received development funding from The Norwegian Film Institute - Nye veier for both the sci-fi-drama series Year 2098 and for the feature Ebba & The Lover (to be produced by Ape&Bjørn). Ebba & The Lover got an Honorable Mention at the Scandinavian Debut pitch-competition at The Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund in 2017. Her second feature, The Swedish-Finn, is in development with the Sweden-based production company Verket Produktion.
In the winter of 2018, Johanna Pyykkö is shooting her next short (The Manila Lover) in The Philippines. The short is produced by Barbosa Film (Norway) and EpicMedia (The Philippines), with funding for production from The Norwegian Film Institute and Arts Council Norway.
At the Göteborg International Film Festival 2017, Pyykkö was awarded The Bonnie Scholarship Dragon Award - presented to a filmmaker who has made a special effort. In 2018, she was selected to participate in the Nordic Film Lab arranged by the film institutes in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland together with Göteborg International Film Festival. Earlier Pyykkö was one of the participants in the F-Starter program; arranged by Film I Väst with support from The Swedish Film Institute. In 2017 she was chosen for the FilmLab Norway-program. She has also worked as a SAD/director's assistant on the Swedish TV-drama (Re)volt and as Joachim Trier's director's assistant on his latest feature Thelma (2017).
Johanna Pyykkö’s family is from Finland, she grew up in Sweden and now lives in Norway. Her films are often about identity, belonging/alienation, gender and power.
