Five

Based off of the novel by Albert Camus, Five is a noir-inspired crime film that follows a teenager named Meursault who is apathetic to all emotion and events in his life. The death of his mother has no impact on his demeanor, and he goes on a date with his girlfriend only hours after visiting his mother’s grave. Neutral to his best friend Raymond’s cruelty, he helps him abuse his girlfriend just to please him. After Raymond's abuse lands the pair in trouble, Meursault shoots another boy and fires four more shots into his limp body, killing him. He expresses no regret, and confesses to the murder at a safe house. For his crime, he is sentenced to death, but despite the efforts of those surrounding him to help him reform his soul, he remains dismissive of religion. He views it as equally arbitrary as emotion. His frustration with society’s lack of acceptance of his apathy remains strong until the end, and society, unable to deal with this emotionless stranger, must ultimately kill him.
