Director Biography - Evelien van Raaij, Marc Raps

Evelien van Raaij was born in the Den Bosch area of The Netherlands in 1990. She learned to be a camera operator at the Koning Willem 1 College in Den Bosch and interned at the local network Boschtion Media, where she worked as camera operator, editor and producer.

Marc Raps was born in Amsterdam in 1987 and raised in Alphen aan den Rijn. After graduating high school, he followed several courses before finding work in the Dutch film and television industry as a freelance electrician and gaffer.

In 2010, both found their way to Enschede, and enrolled in Media, Information and Communication at Saxion University.

A passion for filmmaking made them apply for a special minor program that gave them the chance to stretch beyond the boundaries of their education’s regular courses and produce, write and direct their own short feature. The result is District 24 (a.k.a. De Schoonmaakster), of which they share the director’s credit.

They currently live together near Den Bosch.

Director Statement

Van Raaij: "This is my first film and even though it's set in a violent future, much of it is about dealing with fear of failure. There's certainly some doubt with the main character that echoed my own fears making this movie. But it was important to me to soldier on and make this action film featuring a strong female hero, of which there aren't a lot made in The Netherlands."

Raps: "To me, District 24 is an experiment in world building. We tried to cram as much history as we could in twenty minutes of film, using a flashback structure. I'm really happy with the scope that gave us in our storytelling, and we still have pages of stuff that never made it into the final script. I'd love to develop this world even further. To me, District 24 is like a little pilot. A tiny glimpse into a much larger world where there is still plenty of story to be told."
