Chandler Berrett is a filmmaker and historian as well as a graduate student earning an MFA in film and media arts at the University of Utah. As an undergraduate student at the University of Tulsa, he double majored in film studies and history and then completed the university’s MA in history program. His thesis is titled “Race and Reconstruction on Film.”
Chandler has created, written, directed, produced, and edited three short films. These films include the film noir “Pawn” (2015), the historical drama “A Lively Exchange” (2016), and the prison film “House Jazz” (2016). In early 2018, Chandler released “Pawn: The Series,” a five-episode prequel to the original short film. On his YouTube channel, ChandlerBerrettFilms, Chandler routinely creates and uploads mini-documentaries inspired by his historical studies. These videos cover a variety of relevant historical, social, and political topics, including prison conditions, gun control, the Reconstruction Era, jazz, the Osage murders, and the life of W. E. B. Du Bois.
Chandler has also worked on the production of numerous other short film projects, including “Magicians Anonymous,” “Out from Smoke and Ash,” and “Phantoms.” As a student at TU, Chandler participated in the college’s student news broadcast, TUTV. He primarily worked as the show’s floor manager, but he also spent time as a camera operator, news producer, and entertainment producer. In 2015, Chandler interned at the production company Winnercomm, where he worked on the production and post-production of shows such as “The Big 12” and “SEC Rewind.” As both an intern and an independent contractor for TU, Chandler has made 21 official videos for the university, primarily for the school’s Center for Global Education, serving as the writer, director, producer, composer, interviewer, and editor on each. Currently, Chandler edits a bi-monthly video series for the Tulsa art gallery, 108 Contemporary.
