BEYOND STRAIN

It's the 70s. At the top of their careers, Liliana Cosi and Marinel Stefanescu, the two famous international ballet dancers, join the artistic ideas.
The company carried out more than 2000 shows in Italy and around the world, in theaters, rinks, stadiums, tent theaters and high security jails. From that moment on, the School of Classic Ballet and the Cosi Stefanescu company become a unique cultural heritage on the scene of classic dance.
Thanks to the experience of the two ètoiles, the Russian, Rumanian and Italian styles have been transmitted for the first time directly in Italy to whole generations of professional dancers.
After 40 years of activity and after bringing ballet outside traditional theaters,
the company closed in 2016, due to economic difficulties.
Liliana Cosi and Marinel Stefanescu decided to leave this heritage to their premier danseurs.

Avoiding any romantic or sentimental temptation, BEYOND STRAIN is a film that does not challenge, does not aspire to amaze at first glance, but it's rooted in the strain of the repeated action, establishing a conversation with life and its continuous training, like an aesthetics rooted in the creases of being human. In this sense, cameras plunge into space along with the dancers, feeling part of their dance, into the listening of movements, gestures, suonds, looks. A work of serious and strict contemplation.
The film proposes - in voice over-the testimony of Liliana Cosi and Marinel Stefanescu lessons of the past.

STATEMENT

The relationship between body/s and space rappresent the beginning of my artistic history and somehow the dominant of all my work. The theater offers me the opportunity to constantly ask myself the problem about the boundary between representation and reality.
Therefore, the transformation of the body is part of this process and in addition to representing an anchorage to scenic universe, implies a continous reflection on the concept of temporary and its representation.
My latest works are influenced by the impermanence of the places, by the precariousness of time and existence.
