The new neo-realistic movie of the director Federico Simionato follows the path of the great Italian filmmakers. This is the first film of my "Trilogy of life and of death".
Entirely shot in the city of Florence, Italy, the movie is a tribute to the great writer and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini, who was brutally and cowardly murdered on November 2, 1975 in the city of Ostia, Rome.
The movie "Why not?" is Frederico Simionato’s defiance against the hypocrisy of the Italian society, which is largely divided between corrupted groups.
Frederico Simionato uses a photographic and shooting technique that allows for long sequential shots, which results in few and very complex cuts when editing the movie. This technique makes the viewer feel as if he’s right there on the set, feeling the camera’s movements and connecting with the characters in the movie. All footage was recorded with only a digital camera and a microphone attached to it.
Frederico Simionato chose not to shoot any footage with a supporting camera tripod, allowing the viewer to really feel and breath the images.
The movie is completely independent and had no public or private funding.
The story starts with the murder of a woman named Valentina. The murder suspect is her own husband, Cosimo. The police arrive on the crime scene and bring Cosimo in for interrogation. At this point the character of ‘Francesco’, played by the director himself, enters the movie.
Francesco works for a private investigation firm, and was contracted by Cosimo's family to follow the murder investigation. In the course of the movie Francesco discovers that the police officers responsible for the investigating of Valentina’s murder are corrupt and linked to drug trafficking. This discovery has a great impact on the investigation.
Besides the storyline of Valentina’s murder the movie features a second storyline regarding Fransesco’s girlfriend ‘Elana’ and his best friend ‘Giacomo’. A personal drama for Francesco, again related to drug trafficking
The character of Francesco has a close connection with his mother. This connection is brought in a poetic way.
At the end of the movie more characters die, giving a fatalistic and hopeless life perspective to the story. The film breaks with each and every form of social and political moral.
The film "Why not?" goes against the current of the contemporary Italian movies that mostly produces are superficial movies and comedies. The “Why not?” is a tribute to the classic Italian cinema. "Why not?" is a scandal brought in the form of poetry and beautiful anarchy. With this movie the director, Frederico Simionato, seeks to honor the memory of his master Pier Paolo Pasolini, in the best possible way.
