Troy graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BS in Mass Communications/Advertising in 1986. He began his television career in 1987 as a cameraman for a local cable channel in Richmond, Virginia. Troy later was a founding member of the Richmond-based production company Delmar Communications from 1988-92, rising to the position of Production Supervisor.
In 1992 Troy accepted a position in Cincinnati as Director of Production for VideoWorks, a full service production facility. In March 1993 Troy Thomas founded Inertia Films on a dining room table in Cincinnati, Ohio. Work in the early years was provided by many corporate clients like Procter & Gamble, and daily news magazine programs including Inside Edition, American Journal, Entertainment Tonight, and Extra.
Inertia Films grew in visibility after landing a two and a half year project shooting the reality-based program Real Stories of the Highway Patrol. It was during this time from 1994-96 that Troy honed his skills shooting and field producing a nationally distributed television show. Inertia Films other television credits now include American Idol, Dance Fever, Inside the PGA Tour, PBS NewsHour, Cats 101, NFL on Fox, Path to the Draft and CBS College Football.
September 1996 saw Troy move the Inertia Films’ headquarters to Atlanta, Georgia to leverage the post-Olympic boom that the city was experiencing. Since the move to Atlanta, Troy has added several high profile television series to his camera resume including: Biography, History’s Mysteries, Auction Kings, Total Access, Dogs 101, Gangland, Mobsters, House Hunters, etc.
In June 2003, Troy realized a life-long dream by finally moving his company into their new production facility near downtown Atlanta. The facility includes two digital post-production suites, production offices and a 900 sq. ft. studio with hard cyc.
The year 2003 also earned Troy a South East regional Emmy Award for his camera work on the Inertia Films’ original program Forgiven for Life chronicling the life of David Berkowitz, formerly known as the “Son of Sam.” Troy’s co-producer efforts with David Druckenmiller on the same project earned both of them a SE Emmy Award nomination for best documentary. Troy also won a 2009 SE Emmy Award for Cinematography work on the PBS World War II documentary "Papa said, ‘We should never forget.'” He also directed the historical documentary "Liberty & Slavery: The Paradox of America's Founding Fathers" released in 2016.
Troy has won over 125 awards in various film festivals and video competitions including 17 Telly Awards, CINDY, Axiem, Vision and several Worldfest Houston Awards. His location credits now include 37 US states and 12 countries on four continents.
Troy is the founder and president of Storyteller Ministries, an Atlanta-based non-profit organization.
One of the themes of our "Liberty & Slavery" documentary is racial reconciliation. It is our hope that our program will help white Americans better understand the horrors of chattel slavery in America, and that African Americans will better appreciate the complexities of founding the United States of America.
