I approached HIDDEN DAYLIGHT with a sense of realism. Instead of directing the piece like a thriller, I directed it like a drama. The script made it easy to do so.
The cinematographer and I set the mood by using lots of specific lighting for each location instead of depending on color correction. We agreed on a majority of medium and wide shots to create a tone of uneasiness, as if there was no place to hide regardless of the space we were in.
It was important to me to cast with diversity in mind, and I love the mix of Latin, Filipino, British, and American actors. This inclusion stays true to the philosophy of both production companies behind the short.
I believe that a good director not only sticks with their own vision, but also remains open to fresh ideas from the cinematographer, writer, producer, and even the actors to create a strong film. I had the pleasure of working with an exceptionally talented cast and crew with strong creative vision. I respect each and every one of them and took their suggestions to heart to create a well-rounded, engaging film.
