Home is... village life - Diahren

Just dreaming about country life? That was not enough for Gero, Per, Sarah, Alexandra and many of their neighbors. Coming from Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Leipzig, they moved out, straight into the nature. Tired of the city, they have taken root in the region of Wendland. The little village of Diahren is their home, far away from high-speed Internet, highways and modern infrastructure.

Ten years ago, the village was almost empty

Ten years ago, many of the old farmhouses in the village were untenanted. The farms had become too small for a living from agriculture. Other jobs were missing. A move to the cities was the last resort for many old-established residents. For the newcomers it is a fortune. The houses are large, low priced and the possibilities seem limitless. Meanwhile 60 people live in the village Diahren, including 14 children. The adults find new ways to make money. And they grow cattle, fatten pigs, operate a collective Sunday Café and organize concerts: they turn the village life upside down.

Different worlds

Without the new neighbors, Diahren would be a ghost town. Kai Wiegreffe knows that. The farmer's family cultivates the land around Diahren since ten generations. But they live in different worlds.
The film explores the question why Diahren is a village where people who are tired of living in the city, like striking their roots and how they fund their alternative life in the province. It also shows that people don't need to understand each other to like one another, and that village-life is mainly one thing: social.
