Helen and Marcus Thomas are husband and wife minority cafe owners, working through the daily struggles of married life and keeping their business afloat. Their stressful Saturday morning is interrupted by a call from the Police asking if a detective can come by for a talk. Assuming it has to do with credit card fraud, the Thomas' wrestle with each other on how to best engage the cops. As they feel, being minorities, that they may never get another chance to have their concerns attended to by the authorities.
The visit quickly becomes an interrogation as the two officers, one a hard nosed old timer and his boss, a compassionate Division Sargent, began to question the Thomas', their lifestyle and then finally their son Eric's access to guns. Confused and bewildered on way they are being interrogated, the Thomas fight back only to have the veil of the interrogation turn into a death notification. The night before, son became a victim of an officer involved shooting. The Thomas, overcome with grief can not understand the Police and their tactics, but are powerless to do anything but feel grief.
In the end, we see the Police Officers, African Americans and part of the majority class in this reality, leave to continue their work, each with an agenda, one seeking to hold the blue line, the other, overcome with sympathy for the lives he has just changed.
