Overal Highest Achievement in Animation
Myfanwy King has just completed her Bachelor of Animation at Griffith Film School. At film school she studied subjects in concept design, animation and script writing. There she fell in love with CGI and script writing, which she has chosen to specialize in. Pain in the Rickshaw is her first adventure into directing and hopefully not her last. She would like to continue work on short films and find work in a studio after university to gain more experience.
This film was inspired by the novel the Rickshaw Boy and developed from an idea of Gerry’s. We drew inspiration from the novel and a class trip to China where we explored the world of the protagonist Xiangzi. On the trip we had chance to meet like-minded artist, while exploring Chinas culture. The rickshaw boy follows the protagonist Xiangzi as he struggles against fate and the world, when all he wants to do is just own and drive a rickshaw. I was in touch with the idea of the working class and the struggles they face. This idea of fate keeping us in our place and sometimes being a bitter pill to swallow. I worked in collaboration with Gerard to develop the initial concept and from there, with the help of my production team, it turned into something I hope a bit sad, but at the same time something people can relate to. The struggle of the everyday person against his/her own fate and the way fate isn’t always kind.
