Sticks and Stones Trilogy: The Words Spoken, The Words on the Body, The Marks on the Wall

~It's not about her. It's about what they did to her~

Sticks and Stones Trilogy is an artistic, visceral and emotional interpretation of the true story of American student Amanda Knox, who was imprisoned, wrongfully convicted and ultimately exonerated for the murder of her friend while studying abroad in a small town in Italy. The Words are a documentation of what Amanda Knox was called, that were culled from local and international news articles, police statements and court documents.

A student imprisoned for a crime she did not commit, fights to overcome character assassination and confinement, until her eventual exoneration and release from prison.

An American student is targeted and imprisoned by a prosecutor and the police of a small Italian town for a crime she did not commit. As the community and media join in spreading false narratives and lies about her, she fights to overcome the emotional and physical pain of her character assassination and confinement, until her eventual exoneration and release from prison.

Director Biography - Sienna Reid

Born and raised in a small town in the Pacific Northwest, Sienna Reid is a multimedia artist working in painting, drawing, video, photography and ceramics among other experimental processes. A graduate of the University of Washington with a BFA in painting, since the age of 19 Reid has been exhibiting her work in the USA and Italy, and has work in private collections throughout Europe and the USA. Reid lived in Italy from 1999 until 2014, studying ancient history with a focus on important women, who were powerful and known in their own time, but whose remembrance have been systematically destroyed in the annals of patriarchal history. In 2007 Reid scrutinized the Amanda Knox trial in Italy and created a documentation of words used against the 20 year old girl while imprisoned. Reid wrote and directed Sticks and Stones Trilogy in response to this documentation, and inspired by her previous studies of historic pillorying of women through the millennia. In 2013, Reid moved to NYC, opening a studio in Bushwick where she continued her work, and previewed the seminal works of the Sticks and Stones project at Bushwick Open Studios in 2014 and 2015. The project elicited intense public interest in the project. In 2017 Reid moved to Hudson, NY where she currently lives and works. Since 2007 Reid has transformed "Sticks and Stones" into a large multimedia project including ceramics, drawings, paintings, etchings, photography and film. Her interest is to create dialogue about the etymology and semantics of the words that are routinely used to describe women, whether they are historic figures, living normal lives, or in the spotlight of public in media or politics. Reid's work focuses a spotlight on historic and contemporary scapegoating, shaming and abuse of power against women, people of color and the LGBTQ+ community, and the use of words to harm the individual and these collective groups.

Director Statement

Reid uses an experimental, artistic approach in her film Sticks and Stones Trilogy, to explore the kind of abuse of power that can often occur by the police, judiciary and the media, and its impact on the individual when it leads to wrongful imprisonment. Based on the real-life character assassination of Amanda Knox during her imprisonment and trials from 2007 until her exoneration in 2015, it showcases the words used to sell a prosecutorial fantasy along the lines of the Salem Witch Trials. The film trilogy explores the power of words to harm, the emotional pain of the wrongfully convicted, and fear of female sexuality. It demonstrates how words were deployed to control judicial and media narratives regardless of facts. This project is timely and important to a public alarmed by police, judicial, and media abuse of power, and provides a platform for dialogue about the power of words, our responsibilities as a community, and the standards to which we must hold those in power.
