Are You New?
Millions of people migrate to Mumbai every year to achieve their dreams in the hope of a better life. There is a very popular perspective about the city that ‘Mumbai accepts those who accept Mumbai’ but there are millions of migrants who even after spending their whole life in this metro feel alienated and think that one can never understand the city. The film is about just one guy out of this crowd.
Mahesh a young engineering graduate from Allahabad, U.P. migrated to Mumbai in search of a good job starts living at an apartment with Vinod and Dilip who were once his seniors in college. Both of them take full advantage of Mahesh as he is new to the city. Travelling through the crowded local trains, searching jobs, facing job interviews, working hard to take care of the apartment becomes his daily routine. On occasions, Mahesh faces discrimination and sometimes he just misunderstands the reality. Mahesh meets different people with different experiences and opinions about Mumbai. Gradually his search for job becomes his struggle for survival in the city. That is the time when this city becomes cruel and life becomes absurd. Like everyone Mahesh thinks that the city will change his life and it happens indeed, but not as he wishes.
While narrating Mahesh’ journey film also highlights the problem of regional discrimination happening with north Indians (specially from UP & Bihar) who migrate to Mumbai.
