Surreal Circus
This no budget contemporary circus film, Surreal Circus, pushes the boundaries of what circus and life are, through the exploration of the theme “a journey from death to life”. A pair of strange and comedic avant-garde “europop clowns” called “Diabolo & Whipcatch” present and interrupt the 6 main vignettes which offer their different perspectives on the theme. A Greek goddess, Persephone, emerges from a fiery cave with unicycling shadows that juggle and chain her. Diabolo & Whipcatch look for joy in a bizarre exploration of consciousness. A heart attack becomes an aerial circus dance upon red silk arteries. Thoughts are juggled in a beautiful garden of movement and concussion. Quantum reality is kicked around in a world of impossible skill, and finally two men emerge from the forest soil like trees, into stunning handstands, interweaving in relationship, until they find their stillness together. This is the first film by writer, director & producer Rachael C Lindsay and was made in Belfast in 2015-16, in collaboration with local circus performers and professional musicians, as well as camera operators and editors from around Ireland.
