Director Statement

My intention is take the viewer on a journey to experience the culture as I experienced it, with that deep sense of inspiration, discovery, joy, trouble, fear, anger, release, upheaval and tangled questioning that the culture brings. It feels imperative that the film be experienced as we experience the ups and downs for life, unpredictable and outside of the comfort of regular cinema structure. To drive the viewer into the city and lead them down an untrodden path, leaving them with a deep understanding of the heart of the New Orleans beat.

It’s taken a village to make it. The artists have put a huge amount of energy into the culture over decades yet it remains largely unknown. Hopefully we can change that by giving the music context. The music is a language being invented from moment to moment and a mirror to everything going on in the projects. This story matters deeply to those inside it and I hope the messages will ring clear. We spent eight years compiling the history, anecdotes and tracking down lost legends to construct a story that binds their history together. I would happily put one of our local key contributors as the directors if that makes the film eligable, most important is that it is shown on home soil.

I’ve uploaded the file of where it is at. Forgive me, I read on your submission page that you consider projects in their final stage and I am keen to get it in this year. I will do the final mixdown and improvements this month. I'll need to license some material if it is to be accepted into the festival and I will begin approaching the artists for final sign off. We want to make sure it’s done right, it is not only compelling, but a proud body of work preserving a rich history that will otherwise be lost.
Thank you for watching.
