Marco Reekers (29) was schooled as a theatre director at the Erasmus Institute for Fine Arts in Brussels. But his love for directing in theatre was just as great as his passion for stories told through film.
“The possibilities that you can create with film are always highly exciting. I like to combine that with the subversive elements that I used on the stage”
Reekers is delivering proof in his works of how theatrical elements can playfully transform into film.
His strenght is that he can create lively situations, with exceptional eye for detail. He doesn't fear harsh realities and the current themes of society, which makes him a director who's able to play on the edge of the knife.
Reekers has the uncanny ability to know which stories to tell at which time. 3 Years before the broadway release of American Idiot the musical, he directed an independent version of the same show unbeknownst of the plans that were in place.
He also made a short film called Kill Your Friends based upon the book by the same title. Two years later a feature film by the same title was produced by Unigram and AI-film, based upon the same book.
According to Reekers the 80’s will be the new 70’s but with a slightly more cynical approach. His view is that not only does every place in time gets the generation it deserves, but also gets the history it deserves.
“The massive activism has gone, and is replaced by clicking massively on a facebook like-button. I don’t particularly think that that’s a problem, but I do think we need to wake up and smell the context of the world that was created for us”
True creativity you find in endurance and a lot of really really hard work.
