6 OBJECTS - Projecting Identity Expressions
The artistic documentary film (10min) brings together individuals with different backgrounds who are often separated into groups and raises questions about how we experience, judge and define (gender)identity.
The short movie is the debut film of Debora Dax. The project is an example that illustrates how she combines psychological paradigms and creative translations as well as develops methods in order to collect and convey information (e.g. to portray intimate stories with powerful images). Six people with various backgrounds such as trans, drag or non-binary are interviewed on the base of their most meaningful object for their transformation and/or gender expression. Artistic choices for visual and acoustic elements were made in order to guide the audience’s attention towards the stories of the characters. The six characters do not come into view but express their identity through their object by means of another’s body.

The Swiss designer has been examining the impacts of a design concept on the audience and has been developing methods to collect and convey information such as people’s needs and experiences. On the individual level, the projects of Debora Dax aim to increase well-being and enhance bodily sensations; on the interpersonal level, her works manifest values such curiosity, empathy or belonging.

Combining psychological paradigms and creative translations (BA Design Academy Eindhoven, Man and Communication [new: Media and Culture], NL; MSc in the Psychology of Social Relations, Goldsmiths, University of London, UK), my concepts and initiatives are made to evoke knowledge transfer and connections between different groups of people as well as to enable self-reflections and public debates on contemporary topics and societal issues around body norms, changing identities or structures of communities.
