Director Statement

Toby's Odyssey was born out of an idea I had when when a family friend decided to track down his own long lost father after 35 years of never having met him. Transposing this central theme onto the story of a young, poorly boy looking for his father before it is too late became the emotional film Toby's Odyssey.

It started out life as a feature length screenplay entitled 'My Dad'. While waiting to assemble the finance for this, I decided that I so much wanted to film this story that I would go ahead and make a short film of it first.

Casting for the young ten year old lead of Toby would be crucial to the film's success and after trawling through many applications, newcomer Conor Edridge came to the fore. The moment I met Conor I knew that we had found our Toby and from that moment on the filming of this became a great joy. Conor was fantastic and utterly believable in the role. We also had to find a young actress to play the cheeky Charlotte who befriends Toby on his journey. Having been in several TV Commercials, the young Katya Fowler was cast and the interplay between the two child leads benefited the film immensely,

I hope you will enjoy watching Toby's Odyssey as much as I enjoyed making it. It is intended to be an emotional, touching and thought-provoking drama. If you leave the cinema with a tear in your eye then I feel that my job is done.
