Experiencing Interruptions?

Crowd-Sourced Intelligence Agency

The Crowd-Sourced Intelligence Agency (CSIA) is an online application and interactive artwork that allows users to experience how Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) is processed by intelligence agencies. The app is designed to emulate aspects of systems found in technical manuals, research reports, academic papers, and documents that were leaked or released through Freedom of Information Act requests in order to expose potential problems, assumptions, or oversights inherent in the processes currently being used. The application consists of three main parts: a surveillance interface where users can evaluate Tweets based on their threat to national security, a feature that allows users to test and search their own social media posts, and a Naïve Bayes supervised machine-learning classifier. Users can review the algorithm’s decisions for accuracy and idiosyncrasies. The CSIA provides first-hand experience with social media monitoring, allowing users to choose how they want to navigate social media surveillance.

Director Biography - Derek Curry , Jennifer Gradecki

Derek Curry’s academic research and artwork investigates how automated decision-making technology used in algorithmic stock trading and Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) gathering have augmented the nature of human agency and provided new spaces for intervention. Curry is a PhD candidate in Media Study at SUNY Buffalo.

Jennifer Gradecki’s artistic research investigates information as a source of power and resistance: using methods of institutional critique and tactical media, she constructs models of secretive and specialized systems to enable a practice-based understanding of hegemonic institutions and allow for their re-imagination. Gradecki is currently a PhD candidate in Visual Studies at SUNY Buffalo.

Curry and Gradecki earned their MFAs in New Genres from UCLA's Department of Art in 2010. They have participated in numerous international exhibitions and conferences, including the New Media Gallery in Zadar, AC Institute in New York, Science Gallery in Dublin, the New Gallery in Calgary, Critical Finance Studies in Amsterdam, the International Symposium on Electronic Art in Vancouver, and Radical Networks at NYU Polytechnic | Eyebeam.
