Americas In-between

Isthmus that connects the North to the South, Central America is one of the richest and most threatened reservoirs of biodiversity of the planet. From Southern Mexico to Panama, Barbara and Julien led a 200-day expedition alongside those who act to protect nature in this region. Through encounters, discoveries and testimonies, the two biologists share with us their adventure, both scientific and human. This inspiring documentary, on a road movie tone, warns us to take urgent action, invites us to reconsider our relationship with nature and questions our answers in addressing the biodiversity crisis.

Director Biography - Barbara Réthoré, Julien Chapuis

Animal Behavior and Nature Conservation specialists, Barbara and Julien are making the link between the scientific community and the general public.

From field trips, adventures and explorations, the couple designs a variety of educational materials - exhibitions, movies, lectures, workshops, outreach... - for the general public and also for the youth. Also University lecturers, they both intend to bring their expertise to help with the preservation of biodiversity. To reunite all their different activities, they have recently created their own business: NatExplorers.

Barbara has traveled the world for many years - as a marine biologist and environmental scientist - lived in Hawaii for 5 years, before coming back to France few years ago. She has worked on various topics, ranging from communication of marine mammals and songbirds to the impacts of tourism on wildlife, through the management of runoff water.
Julien has always had a taste for exploration and a strong passion for nature. He has long worked with captive animals in research centers and zoos, on issues such as social influences - including maternal behavior - cognition or the effects of stress, before returning to his early aspirations.

Alongside their work, Barbara and Julien volunteered in the environmental non-profit organisation Conserv-Action they founded together in 2012. The NPO aims to support actions for the conservation of endangered animals . They are heads of the science and exploration department, of the outreach programs as well as the conservatory projects support program.
