Amar Prithibi

SYNOPSIS - AMAR PRITHIBI
Amar Prithibi is the story of self-respect of an uneducated, so-called uncultured villager - the tragic tale of a daughter who sacrifices herself for the honour of her innocent mother. The film essays through colourful visuals and touching emotions the conflict of selfishness and shallowness of the urban mindset with that of the unsophisticated but with depth of humanity, simple yet dignified sentiments of rural folk.
Disha on her 21st birthday unexpectedly meets her father’s friend Advocate Tridib Mukherjee. She realizes that the strong ill-feelings she harbored for her father were unfounded. Her mother had not told her the complete story of why her father deserted her. She is then reminded of her visit to her ancestral village Bakulpur as a child, and the story unfolds as a flashback: Soumya, a city-based doctor, his wife Tithi and their little daughter Disha travelling to Bakulpur village - each in a different frame of mind - Disha to enjoy her vacation, Soumya with nostalgia for his village where he spent his childhood and boyhood, with an urge to do something for his people there and Tithi with the sole purpose of selling-off the ancestral property which Soumya inherited as a sole heir, to fund her dream of owning a bigger house in a posh.locality.
Soumya, on meeting his friends after seven long years lets his hair down, which is seen in the only song where he breaks free of the shackles of his cocooned urban life and relives old memories. The lack of medical facilities in the village upsets him and being a doctor he decided to start an hospital there. For this purpose he decides to donate his ancestral house. However, Tithi is opposed to the idea. She is not in favour of losing out on the property, which she feels will be foolishness. Soumya is torn between his ideologies and his wife’s attitude.
Conflict breaks out when Tithi’s actions cause severe emotional and physical hurt to the people extremely close to Soumya. Kakababu, the old, loyal and well-respected caretaker of the family-property feels humiliated when Tithi accuses him of enjoying the property and offers him ‘commission’ for getting the property sold-off. Kakababu leaves the house in despair and dejection. Soumya’s school-friend Hari, now insane, is beaten up by Tithi for coming close to her daughter, which proves fatal for him. Soumya, the sole witness to the incident holds Tithi responsible for it. Mashi, the poor, elderly and caring housemaid with motherly affections for Soumya, already tormented by the village moneylender becomes the natural suspect for Tithi when her expensive gold necklace goes missing. She is subjected to accusations and is almost strip-searched. Eventually Tithi finds the necklace in her makeup box, but by then it is too late - Mashi’s young daughter has sacrificed herself by marrying her mother’s tormentor - the moneylender, in return for money to pay-off the cost of the necklace and save the honour of her innocent mother!
