Artist Statement

"Nighthawks" is an animated short film produced by Fang Ji. The scoring idea was inspired by the interesting transitions of images and story of the film, which reminded me of an old Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi's theory - how do human be sure about what happens in front of them is real or not (from "The Butterfly Dream"). I felt that the feeling is so close but also so far, because it's about activities on human's mind and the reality that they may not really understand. Therefore I tried to stand as the third party to score this film, and created a mysterious but intimate atmosphere for the film. I used both electronic and traditional instrumentation to achieve the feeling of the music that I wanted, and it was a great and special scoring experience.
