Experiencing Interruptions?

Marianne and the Water Veil

There are certain images with such strong associations with particular meanings that it seems almost impossible to see them for what they really are. A shaved female head is definitely one of them. It nearly always implies something negative; a disease, a punishment, etc. Marianne and the Water Veil shows fragility of such image. The video is part of the series Haiku Videos, which originate in daily recordings with minimal staging. They are created when a real life situation motivates an idea. Like in Haiku poetry, the images of Haiku Videos are based on directly observed events, objects or occurrences.

Director Biography - Nataša Prosenc Stearns

Nataša Prosenc Stearns is a Slovenian born video artist and filmmaker based in Venice, CA. She moved to Los Angeles on a Fulbright Grant for her MFA at CalArts.

Nataša's work spans across several fields: single channel videos and films, multichannel video installations, video objects and prints. It reflects on the uncertain place in today’s world of consumerism and constant crisis, attempting to touch upon our center of empathy. It expresses angst, absurdity, the anxiety and the feeling of alienation. She is also focusing on human body, striving to find a ground of connection that unites people with the organic world, a safe place for healing and expansion. So her work often resides in the variable spaces between the world and the physical body, frequently hinting on its potential limitlessness.
