Award-winning playwright and animal-fanatic, Menon was a working actor in British Theatre and television. She moved to Canada and learned how to make films; but returned to her theatrical roots to explore the use of heightened language. In addition, Menon is an award-winning art director for indie and art house films and an MFA candidate in Creative Writing at University of Guelph. Her play Ganga’s Ganja, finalist of Herman Voaden Playwriting contest 2013 opens at Storefront Theatre, Toronto in April 2018.
I began writing because as a young actor in the U.K in the 90s; I was unable to find much work, pickings were slim and roles most stereotypical that I was moved to write plays and screenplays that reflect myself and the multitude of other strong, independent South Asian women I know.
Themes of my work are informed by my own life experiences and often my stories are about relationships, loss, guilt, exclusion and redemption. Dark humour and startling consequences fill the worlds I create and I wrestle with the most personal intimate relationships- husband and wife, mother and child, but I also struggle to comprehend epic history that birthed social norms as they exist today. I am obsessed with methods of social control, especially religion- that molds, sets and churns out model citizens. I am very interested in humanity’s need to segregate and categorize segments of society and it seems to be a theme running through my body of work.
I am excited about making films and looking forward to some rewarding collaborations to make a feature film some day soon.
