Sure is Quiet Since the Goldfish Died

Once upon a time (spring of 1958) in a place far away (Buffalo, NY), the following story actually took place. Jack Pott's little brother (Ken) and he were anxiously awaiting the arrival of their new baby sister (Kathy) when Mom and Dad decided the family would soon need more room. However, instead of finding a new, larger place, "Bob the Builder" planned on adding a basement to our existing house. The house we lived in was a pretty big, 2-story, 4-bedroom building, with a porch and patio. Just as soon as the permafrost released its firm grip on everything, dad sprung into action. Soon we were packing our pillows and provisions to stay with neighbors across the street. A few days later and before the house was moved, Mom and I went back to gather a few things we had forgotten - some dishes, towels, etc. That's when we spotted "Artie" the goldfish, nearly frozen in his bowl. In a panic, we tried our best to revive him, but to no avail. Neither warm hands, nor mouth-to-mouth seemed to help. We realized there was nothing we could do but return to our temporary home. And it was very quiet that night. Later, when the basement was finished and the house was moved back, we had a full-sized basement. Soon we had a small funeral for our loyal pet, and then, abruptly, flushed him down the toilet. And that's the last we mentioned Artie, but we all learned a valuable lesson - Don't ever forget; and someday make a video!
