Originally from Paterson, NJ, Aliya Brooks had an animated imagination, that at times got her through difficult situations. Being the youngest of two daughters, Brooks was introduced to the arts second-handedly, however, found her niche there. She later graduated from the University with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing, but remained consistently involved in the Spoken Word crowd in Tampa, FL. Since graduating, Brooks has written and performed several poems, but felt the urge to be heard on a different plane.
Hoping to see 4D and more relatable characters, Brooks took matters into her own hands and several projects were born.
Lesbian and bisexual women have been at the forefront of television through shows like, 'The L Word', 'The Real L Word', 'Wentworth', and more recently 'Orange is the New Black' . Although these platforms are available, there is a lack of representation regarding the black lesbian experience.
In seeing that lack, I felt the urge to share the experience, and educate those on the vast amount of similarities between lesbian and heterosexual relationships.
In this quest, the short film entitled, 'She Knows' was born and is becoming an ode to the underrespresented group.
'She Knows' will introduce the world to a straight laced newspaper columnist who explores an unexpected love affair with a determined sous chef, that stirs up more emotion than anticipated.
