Director Biography - Angeliki Coconi

My name is Angeliki Coconi and I am a writer and filmmaker born in Athens, Greece, and living in Florence, Italy. I have a BA in Literature from the University of Athens, and a MSc in Literature from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. I also have a Postgraduate Certificate in Screenwriting from the Screen Academy of Scotland. I am an English and Greek native speaker, and speak four more languages fluently.

When I write, I engage mostly in comedy, both in English and Greek. My screenplays have been praised for the sense of humour, originality of the stories and the quality of the dialogues. Many of my plays have been in competition at various prestigious festivals worldwide, and nearly all have reached the finalist stage. My screenplay "The English Katerina Tsavalou" was awarded the Colorado Screenplay Award - Platinum.

I am also running an online film recommendation magazine, “Unsung Films”, where my team of writers and I write about films on a weekly basis. “Unsung Films” has been praised by The New York Film Academy and renowned movie critic Roger Ebert on several occasions.

Since 2013, I have been working closely with “The Theatre of The New World”. I have translated three theatre plays, “Pests”, “Lampedusa” and “Stones in his Pockets” which went on to become highly successful productions in Athens and which to this day are attracting viewers of all ages and backgrounds.

Finally, I have written, directed, shot and edited two short films, the mockumentary "The Magnet", which appeared in various festivals in Europe and the United States, and "Mick”. "The Magnet" won an Award of Merit from The Indie Fest for its "exceptional sense of humour"; it also won an Award of Merit from The Accolade. I then went on to produce, direct and edit the feature-length film “Empty Orchestra”, a travel documentary taking its audience through moving photographs into the heart of the everyday life of Songkhla, a little southern town in Thailand.

At the moment, I am working on another feature-length documentary film on Gianni di Sario, the typical-but-still-eccentric Calzolaio of Via Dei Ginori, in Florence. I am photographing and filming him as he is repairing, working, creating, becoming frustrated and getting buried in his own dust. When completed, “Dal Calzolaio” should be the end result of a long and loving collection of moments in that little other-dimension-workshop hidden right in front of the Florence crowds.
