Director Statement

I would like to say first that BLACK RAT is a student film. BLACK RAT was made as my student film as part of my film course in Macquarie University.

BLACK RAT is my take on the 80s neon thriller reworked into a documentary about a real life superhero. I was captivated by the story of The Black Rat, a real life superhero who patrols the neon lit streets of Newtown, a notorious part of Sydney. What attracted me to his crusade against crime was how ordinary he really is. Unlike most real life superheroes, who come across as nutjobs fulfilling a fantasy or are desperate fame seekers, The Black Rat is driven by his traumatic life experiences to make sure no one has to suffer like he did.

While we had to tell his story in an interesting manner, I shied away from painting The Black Rat as a joke. We wanted to tell his story seriously, he isn't a man in a costume but a man who wants to serve his community, he is not a real life superhero, he is a neighborhood watchman.

Thus, this film is the result of us doing justice to his story as a man serving his community.
