Urban reflections. Kontraktova

The Square. Kontraktova square is the heart of Kyiv since ancient times. Kontraktova is the main Market square and the oldest public space of Kyiv dated from 9th century. This is place of burlesque fairs and origin of local democracy, education and perfomance venue. Last time the square has been lost own attractiveness. Central status of the square has been decayed. Urban experts explain the genius loci of Kontraktova from recent times until last reconstruction of Gostinny Dvir. Gostinny Dvir is the gem of Kontraktova Square and the main point direction for public activities during last 30 years. This building suffered of consequences of the tragedy of commons, expanded on Kontraktova Square in 2012-2014. Movie’s authors try to evaluate the value of Kontraktova Square together with public space’ users, experts on architecture, sociology, history, visual communications and transport, passersby.

Director Biography - Roman Pomazan, Aliona Stuliy, Konstantin Komishanov

After 10-year architectural practice Roman made the effort of urban studies trough documentary making. he was granted by Heinrich Boell Stiftung for filming series of urban docs about actual urban issues for definite locations in Kyiv City. Hromadske TV rendered an active assistance in promotion of the urban docs in media realm.

Director Statement

#Urban reflections. #Kontraktova is a temporal cut of genius loci of Kontraktova square. Issued in the end of 2014 this movie forced the process of rethinking of the square by local citizens and district authorities. In 2015 Kyiv City administration launched a concurs on revalorization of Kontraktova's public space.
