BERETTA M1934
It was the year 1910, for the first time in India, when communal fundamentalism and sectarianism was at its peak. Caste based discrimination actually made the upper class people especially the businessmen completely against to the people from lower class strata. The same year Ramchandra Godse was born to a postman Vinayak Godse, who had already lost 4 of his infants in premature death. Afraid of losing Ramchandra as well, he superstitiously decided to bring him up as a girl. Ramchandra’s nose rings made his friends tease him as Nathuram which not only made Nathuram reclusive but eccentric as well. Vinayak imposed his communal and caste based hatred on Nathuram, but Nathu’s childhood innocence refused to buy that. What actually influenced him was a pre-humanitarian and pro-poor ideology of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Just like thousands of students, Nathuram also boycotted his school to lend his full time support to Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement against the british for their brutal Jallianwala Bagh massacre. But later Gandhi withdrew the movement on realizing that nation was not prepared for the freedom to lead as a civilized society. This took back Nathu from his firm belief in Gandhian ideology. Disappointed, he stepped into the patriarchal shoes of his father which made him to follow a famous freedom fighter turned a communal bigot Vinayak Sawarkar. Nathuram joined Savarkar’s party when he finished his teens and from there he won Savarkar’s confidence with his active involvement in protests against the politicians and rulers who were appeasing Muslims. In one such protest, Nathuram was arrested. This protest was severely condemned by Mahatma Gandhi on the lines of disturbance of communal harmony. Nathuram took it personally and from there onwards he decided to confront Gandhian ideology through a newspaper which he started with another member of Savarkar’s party Hindu Mahsabha called Narayan Apte. As Narayan was involved in first unsuccessful assassination attempt on Mahatma Gandhi, Nathu made another 2 failed attempts on Gandhi in the year 1942. Their hatred against Gandhi reached to the level, where they naturally started misinterpreted Gandhi in the context of independence, partition and paying Pakistan the due amount. Eventually they decided to assassinate him on 20th January 1948 with intent of fleeing back safe. But dependence on some vulnerable sharp shooters goofed up their whole planning. Nathuram then decided to kill Gandhi on 30th January 1948 on his own while surrendering to police after the job is done so that he can put across his ideology to the whole nation making courts and his trial as his podium. And this is what happened next.

I was an engineer before switching to the screenwriting. Since my childhood, I had an inclination towards hindi films. Plus, ever since I have been quiet expressive about socio-political and human issues. These were few reasons for me to tell my stories through the medium of cinema which reaches to the every edge and corner of the world. All my stories and script are derived out of my ideology which is pro-humanitarian and leftist in approach. On the top of that more than anything I understand the socio-economic structure of India where a viewer prefers accessible content laced with appealing elements. I always try to weave such things in my script without affecting the innocence and purity of the central thought.
THE MEN WHO KILLED GANDHI.
Yes, there is no spelling mistake. Its not MAN, its MEN. Whenever something about Gandhiji’s assassination comes up, few answers/opinions instantly strikes to us as per our knowledge. It was Nathuram Godse who triggered the bullet, 30th January, Birla Bhawan, 12:30 in the noon ..... that is it. A common man still perceives Nathuram Godse as some victim of partition or british rule.
Greatness of Gandhiji is well known in general. Books, literature, documentaries, movies are ample and at the same time authentic to prove it. But, the idea is to look at the other side of the coin. The approach is to explore and address the reasons which led to rise of counter ideology. The purpose is to go beyond the history books which has been taught to the large mass of India ever since independence.
Following the basics of cinema, we chose this story for multiple reasons to be told to the audience as it is appealing yet unknown, unexplored and shocking as well.
While scratching the history books one gathers information of Nathuram Godse who pulled the trigger but there were 5 other men behind the plotting of incident. Nathuram was a journalist, with great command over literature, philosophy and religion. He was a great supporter of Gandhiji during Non- Cooperation movement. He in-fact left his government job and chose to tailor the clothes for survival. There are hundreds of such hidden truth that our script unfolds. One of the major among them is that “GANDHIJI / Father of the nation” could have been saved but due to police and few politician’s negligence and cowardliness of witnesses, it became unavoidable.
But was that it?? Was allocating 55 crore to the Pakistan by Mahatma Gandhi the only reason for his assassination?? OR this is what our half-backed history books have told us??
In actuality truth is something else which comes beyond the chapters of books and pages of research journals. Right from fear of Brahmins of Maharashtra loosing their dominance to a secular nation, to giving more importance to muslim community there are many reasons which made Nathuram Godse and other conspirators to attempt Mahatma’s assassination for 6 times in total.
Despite a periodic script, it is not on a massive scale in terms of production. Here our protagonists are the conspirators. With this factor we want to light up the darkness that Indian Cinema has imposed on Indian audience. We have just followed the basics of cinema i.e Movie is about story telling and a story comprises of characters and the crisis they deal with.
Treatment of script is done with a balance approach. The content would be easily accessible to the every category of audience. Also, we don’t want any stamp of art-house / commercial / offbeat cinema. There is no message in the script i.e Nothing is on the face.
Screenplay follows a non-linear pattern as it has been broken into six chapters. Various technical aspects like voice overs, off sounds, montages etc are involved. It is multilayered at some places with an open ending. Dialogues are in colloquial parlance with the 1870 - 1950 period. The dramatic premise of screenplay deals in back story of the conspirators, present lives, meeting with each other, plotting of incident, failures and internal conflicts, formation of the ideological, sociopolitical circumstances. At the end of the day, our script is subtle and authentic with few cinematic liberties (without compromising with any historical facts) at various places aiming to reach out to audience of every category.
