Fall Seven Times, Get Up Eight: The Japanese War Brides

A short film about three Japanese women who emigrated to the US in the 1950s as war brides of American men. Their recollections are further refracted through the eyes of their Japanese-American daughters -- a photojournalist, a newspaper editor, and a freelance journalist. Personal photographs and visuals from US archival sources help bring to life this fascinating episode in US history.

Director Statement

We are three journalists who have known each other for many years and often connect around shared professional interests in Japan. Kathryn told Lucy about wanting to write a book about Japanese war brides, but this was 20 years ago, and child-raising and work got in the way. Then Lucy and Karen pointed out the obvious. We should collaborate on a film about our mothers. Three journalists with three war bride mothers -- how can we not tell that story!
