Director Statement

Bert Hightower, a first generation, working-class Black American college student, struggles to define himself. Distancing himself from his true love Nita, Bert dives into campus life, music and pursuit of other women. But what his future holds weighs heavy on his soul. Shot in 16 mm black & white analog, employing a neo-realist style, The Evolution of Bert offers a witty, poignant and surreal mediation on a black young man becoming.
