Director Statement

During the colonial era, many nations and victims suffered due to that period. My country, Indonesia, has a long history related to the colonial era. In that history, the occurrence of slavery caused by the colonizers is inseparable. Slavery occurred in several countries that were victims of the colonial era. Besides having a dark history related to the colonial era, Indonesia has a diverse range of cultural assets stored. One of them is 'Jaman Edan' (Crazy Era) and 'Jaman Wolak Walik' (Upside Down Era) written by a poet named Ronggowarsito. In his explanation, it is written about an era where the sense of humanity disappears and truth is no longer considered important. This is similar to life in the colonial era, where some groups or individuals prioritized personal interests over humanity.

In this opportunity, through my final study assignment via film media, I want to provide an interpretation of issues related to humanity from my perspective in cultural texts. Starting from the Javanese Wayang story about the Solar Eclipse, I try to tell the story of a female slave named Arundaya who fights against a greedy figure named Batara Kala. In this film, I try to combine the world of Batara Kala and the world of Arundaya. In the world of Batara Kala, it is formed in a studio setting that tells the story of a film crew conducting a shooting process with Batara Kala. I want to provide an interpretation of how I, and perhaps many people, when seeing a figure of greed, only try to highlight it with a camera or cellphone without resisting or even unconsciously befriending that figure. Meanwhile, in the world of Arundaya, I want to provide an interpretation of nature and minority groups embodied in a woman. With this form, I want to give my interpretation of oppressed groups, because from my perspective, there are still many oppressed groups in a country that claims to be independent.

Although without dialogue, this film is expected to deliver a message to the audience regarding human rights in this modern era. The story in this film shows our inability or unawareness of greed or a figure who has tortured his slaves as a symbol of the rights of every human being. In this film, I try to throw a question whether only I am aware of this or we are all unaware of it?
