Director, Writer
Assaf Ben Shetrit was born some forty years ago in Jerusalem. His parents named him after the minister of culture and poetry for King David. And destiny or not that is the path he has followed. He studied acting at the acclaimed Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in New York over five years. Then it was time to conquer the stage and his fears. Assaf starred in over a half dozen original productions both Off-Off Broadway and Off Broadway building up to "The Last Virgin" a play that received favorable reviews in the New York Times. He was also involved in several award winning short films until moving to Los Angeles and appearing in film and TV.
The transition to writing and directing was a natural one. Assaf has written more than a dozen screenplays as well as a TV pilot and ending with a novel "The Thin Line", self-published at the end of 2012. Recently Assaf finished a second book "Suspects of Admiration" as well as penning the script for "Shine Defiantly" about the life of Chiune Sugihara and his quest to save more than 6000 Jews in WWII.
Assaf has directed two short films "Let’s Get Awesome" and "Smoke, Mirrors" and is set to direct the feature "In Finis" about a discovery of a lost book of the bible and the Dead Sea Scrolls under the umbrella of Fooya Films.
Jean Luc Godard adds a quote at the beginning of his movie "Contempt": "The cinema substitutes for our gaze a world more in harmony with our desires." He quotes Andre Bazin.
I have always felt that nothing better has been said about making films - they allow us to view our lives, world, imagination in different ways than what we are faced with in reality.
When I examine my life I can only ever see what I did and the outcome of my actions. I could never revisit different versions of my existence and so I decided to permit myself to do so. Set with one event I wanted to explore multiple possibilities that can unfold from one scenario. I can only hope the question I put forth is one that I answered in an interesting way to provoke thought.
