The third breath

The third breath is a narrative art film using symbolic and danse to generate emotion and meaning. It deploys as the synergetic meeting between three individualities.

Without ever touching, the three characters are bound together. As in every closed system, every action of one ripples to others.

The painter-performer Yon Costes, the dancer Yutaka Nakata and the composer Aleksi Aubry Carlson mix here their disciplines in a powerful impulse fed by their singular personalities and by their complementary creative dynamics.

Every movement is here trigger and vector of energy, navigating between dark and clear strengths, charged by pairs of opposition (the black and the white, the sky and the earth) which remind precepts governing the art of ink painting.

The dance, the brush and the objects-instruments blend. Water, earth, ashes print on the movie a striking physicality, a rhythmic vitality carried by the commitment of bodies.

As a link between telluric and celestial strengths, this multidisciplinary project builds itself on a set of rhythms and balance where prevails the sobriety. This " third breath " is impulsed by a male trio which plays with the complicity between the interpreters in a space alive by their presences.

Jonathan Mandel is a 37 years old French director,

he started his career in high school where he launched a project based on digital film with two of his friends. Together they produced two short movies and a music video before splitting up. Jonathan kept producing and directing with other young team willing to use what the just emerging digital camera could offer.

After a year spent mostly filming music band and assisting on short movies Jonathan went to business school. He kept close to his passion and worked as a camera operator and directed few digital films for young companies. blog and social media were just beginning and he was creating films aiming at maximizing diffusion on these platforms.

Freshly out of school he started Get in the box, a production company with his high school friend. Together, they worked with agencies that were starting to use the digital format on the web. An expertise they both had with their previous amateur work. As the company rose Jonathan had to focus mainly on production where he supervised under-financed project with high expectations. In three years they managed to get to work with prestigious clients.

Tired of production Jonathan started a new company with his brother, Mandel Bros, where he was able to direct and craft ideas. The company aimed high profiled client by creating projects on spec including a diffusion point of view. Their intention was to please the viewer and not the client by applying narrative technic used in entertainment. Focusing on the storytelling, Jonathan started studying mythology structuration and script writing.
In six years they worked directly with the biggest french company who gave them full control over challenging projects.

Jonathan is now writing and directing fiction and directing for fashion brand and magazine.

Director Statement

The third breath is a hybrid film created as the reconciliation between art and fiction.

We are following the narrative structure of a fiction. Characters are facing struggles they must overcome, using their place and abilities in the system they live in.
But the images and the subject are within the lexicon of art and poetry. Movement therefor vehiculate meanings that everyone can understand. Giving to dance the expression of an action with multiple level of understanding.

The perception of boundaries, knowledge and cycle are the base of the narration. These notions are linked to the very essence of our society.
We all interact with one another and our actions have an impact that erects an organic system.

The one who wants to go out of the boundaries can cause variation that ripple into the cycle of things.

In post production I had the will to entertain and the desire to focus on the subject. I kept a rigorous line and used each cut for a reason.
By doing so the story is surprising and constantly evolving.

Ultimately, this is a film where the audience will understand the story and analyse it within their own perception.

More over it is an art piece as the subject of the film echoes with the film itself, encapsulated in its format, never ending.

A process borrowed to contemporary art.
