Shannon Tracey studied the level 3 National Film and TV BTEC diploma at Weymouth College in Dorset, UK in the class of 2015 as a 16 year old. Before this Shannon studied music, and believed that she could convert her previous knowledge of recording and composing to help her create score for film and specialise in sound. However, as she progressed through the first year Shannon discovered more and more that she enjoyed working on concepts for projects and after investing in her own equipment began broadening her knowledge of cinematography in film. In the final year, of the last project Shannon decided that she was ready to take on the role of director, and from that Ella was made.
Ella was Directed by Shannon Tracey and written by Rebecca Vallard. The crew consisted of fellow Weymouth College media students and was Shannon's first ever opportunity to direct as part of a larger group. The collaboration between writer and director was a successful combination on in the making of Ella, as they aimed to portray the depth of every line through the cinematography of the film. Shannon creatively took the artistic reigns, breaking many "rules" of cinematography, after Rebecca's original inspiration suggested using the power of the middle third to represent the characters isolation and loneliness throughout the film.
Rebecca and I are complete opposites, in height, likes and attitude. But one thing we both had in common is that we were willing to put our body and soul into making something we were proud of. Rebecca always said she didn't feel she could direct her own script as she didn't have the voice to demand and persist with her own desires for the film. That's where I came in, as together we played on each others strengths and cancelled each others weaknesses. Ella was one of the only likeable characters portrayed in the original scripts submitted by our classmates and it was a pleasure to mould her journey for everyone to see. Ella began as simple character description and bloomed into an complex, relatable character with aspirations, demons and life lessons and that can influence us all.
The final monologue of the film is by far my favourite as it summarises emotions we all experience in life, usually around the teenage years Rebecca and I are living now. It sends a message to say make your own decisions in life, don't let anyone influence your plan. And that's exactly what we did when creating Ella. We worked on our vision together, stood firm together and ignored any doubts others had on our stylistic choices for Ella, together.
