The Cat and the Specialists

TV Producer Pyo and Scriptwriter Jeong interview a little girl and her grandmother who feed an injured cat with a nail stuck on his head. The same evening, they successfully shoot the cat and it televises in the whole country.

Next week, four specialists are put in charge of catching the cat. They are Hunter Han (Wildlife hunting specialist), Captain Seo (Special Task Force Rescue Team), Assistant Administrator Go (Heart for Animals Association) and Professor Park (PhD. in veterinary medicine). Producer Pyo and scriptwriter Jeong interview the specialists and shoot processes of catching the cat.

On the first day, Captain Seo’s special task force rescue team is about to catch the cat with scoop net. But, Professor Park stops the Captain Seo and his team members. Because, it would be very fatal if the nail is to be tangled in the scoop net. So, they start to use cage traps from next day. They are all sitting in a tent and watching at a monitor showing their cage traps. For three days, the cat is not easily caught in anyone’s cage traps. However, the specialists are still confident that they will catch the cat.

Actually, each of them wants to catch the cat purposely before anyone else. Professor Park wants the cat for his new research material. Assistant administrator Go, She wants the cat for promoting the association by using her social media. Hunter Han is an experienced hunter, also patentee of his cage trap so he wants the cat for promoting the performance of the cage trap and his hunting skill. Captain Seo also wants the cat for his work performance but he is not good at catching the cat at all. The specialists are competing for the cat and keeping each other in check.

TV Producer Pyo and Scriptwriter Jeong ask the little girl about the cat. But, she said that the cat is not seen for the last a few days. It’s only 2 days left before the broadcasting date. Besides, it rains until the next morning.

Next night, some cat gets caught in Hunter Han’s cage trap. But, it is not the cat with a nail stuck on his head. When everyone is disappointed, Scriptwriter Jeong finds out the cat is running into small alley. So, they block the cat off in the alley and Hunter Han successfully hit the cat with the anesthetic rifle. But, the cat runs away into very narrow space between buildings. After 5 days of trying, the specialists fail to catch the cat. So, they are making excuses, blaming each other, quarreling and fighting later on.

At that time, the cat goes to the little girl’s house and fall asleep. The grandmother pull off the nail from the cat’s head and take the cat to the specialists while Scriptwriter Jeong wants to stop their fighting, picks up the anesthetic rifle and holds the specialists at gunpoint. At this time, they see the cat in grandmother’s arms at some distance. But, the specialists do not recognize the cat without the nail. They are just trying to take the rifle away. The fight is getting bigger and the Special Task Force members are trying to stop the specialists fight with the scoop nets in front of the cat.

Director Biography - Sung Yong KAE

Sung Yong KAE (A.K.A. Seong-Yong Kye in IMDB ) is an actor who was born on July 6, 1973 in Seoul, South Korea. He is known for Korean films like Milae (2002), Pido nunmuldo eobshi(2002) and Geuk jang jeon (2005), Pacemaker (2011). He graduated from University of Technology-Sydney with Bachelor degree in Construction Management in 1998 and also graduated from Seoul Institute of the Arts with major in Film Art and Acting in 2000. Nowadays, He is also interested in screenwriting and short filmmaking.

Director Statement

Basically, My film “The Cat and the Specialists” is a story about greedy people who are chasing the same goal (the cat with a nail stuck on it’s head). The specialists symbolize people in leadership and privileged classes such as politicians, just pretend to solve social problems and keep their benefits at the same time. I make this film to satirize those people comically, not too critically. Because, subject of the film would be very serious without fun and laughs.

The primary themes of “The Cat and the Specialists” are human greed, selfishness, and excessive competition. This film focuses on the intersection of all of these themes through the process of the catching the cat. In the film, the specialists are always together and need to be cooperative but they are compete for the cat and keep each other in check. I focuses on creating disconnected feeling among the specialists. So, I use a tree to separate them in full shots. Also, the specialists are often arranged and directed to oppose each other.

Finally, I hope my film will provide a funny experience for viewers, and a chance to think about our roles and responsibilities in our societies.
