The International Film Festival Golden Beggar is the most important and the biggest annual event in European local television. It encourages high-quality programmes through a competition and through workshops and lectures. From 2009 the competition is open to all filmmakers. For more details see www.festival.sk .
The main prize of the Festival has already become a prestigeous award and proof of successful and creative work, highly valued by authors and creators. Recent years have also seen a growing significance gained by the Young Author and Production Company awards. The Golden Beggar has become an award which is a kind of a hallmark of high professional standards for young authors and independent producers.
The competition for Golden Beggars is devided into three sections:
Each category will have its Golden Beggar. Programs will be listed in 8 categories – Fiction (up to 25'), Fiction (up to 55'), Documentary (up to 25 min), Documentary (up to 55') Animation for children, Animation for Adults, Participatory Media Project, Special category.
AWARDS AT THE 26th INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL GOLDEN BEGGAR
Three of the awards to be presented at the Award Ceremony are named Golden Beggars. The sections of Golden Beggar Awards are:
GOLDEN BEGGAR for the best local television program (financial)
GOLDEN BEGGAR for the best production company film (financial)
GOLDEN BEGGAR for the best young author‘s film (financial)
WHO IS THE GOLDEN BEGGAR?
In the lore of the city of Košice is the story of a beggar, who begged for years. But he used his beggings wisely – saving them and building one of the grandest houses on the main street. The house still stands today, with a Golden Beggar statue on top.

In addition, there will be several programs selected as HONORABLE MENTIONS by the jury.
Due to the current situation, we have to postpone the date of the 26th International Film Festival Golden Beggar 2020.
The deadline for submitting your films has been extended to September 21st, 2020.

We are pleased to inform you that the 26th International Film Festival the Golden Beggar will be held from October 21st to 25th, 2020 in Košice, Slovakia. The festival is organized by the City TV Foundation.
How to enter your film/programme
We encourage you to enter your films/programmes into competition for The Golden Beggar Award in one of the three competition sections (Young Authors, Production Companies and Local Televisions-only for authors from local televisions).
We expect entries that reflect the lives and fates of people living where you live. We also welcome works that uncover serious problems of present-day society, such as refugees, terorism, corruption, blackmail, enviromental matters, minority and cross-border problems and the fate of children.
The deadline for films/programmes to reach us in Košice is 20th August, 2020. All entry forms MUST BE COMPLETED ONLINE on www.filmfreeway.com.
Do not forget! Even if your programme is dubbed or subtitled, you must also include an original AND an English script!
To select the category of your film / programme please use the following category descriptions :
1. Fiction up to 25‘
2. Fiction up to 55
3 Documentary up to 25‘
4. Documentary up to 55‘
5. Animation for Children up to 25‘
6. Animation for Adults up to 25‘
7. Participatory Media Projects (no time limits)
8. Special category : enviromental, ecological themes (no time limits)
Registration fee for fiction, documentary and animation up to 25 minutes is 14 USD. Registration fee for fiction, documentary, animation up to 55 minutes is 20 USD.
There is no registration fee for participative projects and special category.
In terms of length, films/programmes registered for competition should generally not exceed 55 minutes and should have been produced after January 31st, 2018.
You are requested to send electronically the following materials:
- the completed Entry Form
- a preview copy
- synopsis in English (also in electronic form)
- dialogue list both in original and English versions (also in electronic form)
- stills from the film (print quality 300 dpi)
- programme trailer or excerpts from the film on DVD
- flyers or any printed promo material ( if any)
The material received will not be returned to the applicant, unless agreed previously with the organizers.

Please don’t forget to label your materials with the same information as on the Entry Registration Form. To ensure proper processing and judging of your entry, it is important your entry forms and film/programme be received by the Festival before the deadline August 20th, 2020. If you anticipate any problems, please contact us immediately! The costs of transport of the accompanying mterials are the responsibility of the applicants.
Winners of each competition section will be announced at the gala Award Ceremony on October 25th, 2020 in Košice. The International Jury has 7 members and will decide the winner in each section. The Grand Award „The Golden Beggar“ will be given to a film, in any of the categories, which shows a strong journalistic content, an element of originality and clear understanding of the needs of its viewers. The Jury is also authorized to award other prizes and honorary mentions that are not financially remunerated. The Jury also has the right to decide not to give the Grand Award in any particular section
Directors/producers of the films/programmes selected in competition are encouraged to participate and personally present their films/programmes at the Festival. The award-winning producers/directors are expected to be present at the closing ceremony and personally receive their awards. The invitations for the directors/producers of a film/programme are made individually and are subject to the decision of the Festival Director.
Promotion of the films
The organizers reserve the right to use film excerpts of selected films for festival promotional purposes under the following conditions:
less than 3 minutes for films up to 55 minutes,
less than 30 seconds for films up to 30 minutes,
The excerpts can be screened in the Festival movie theatres, broadcast on TV channels
promoting the Festival, on the festival’s official website, in printed promo materials or during any multimedia presentation within the duration of the Festival.
The Festival reserves the right to use programme segments of up to 10 seconds in length in the festival’s official trailer.
The Festival reserves the right to use programme stills in the Festival’s promotional materials, the festival catalogue, promotional flyers, posters, billboards, the festival website, multimedia presentations.
The films will be a part of the festival archive.
The City TV Foundation reserves the right to gratuitous screening of the films awarded in 2020 as a part of the IFFGB 2021 programme. The City TV Fondation would like to provide free access to the films for cultural events and the public connected with the IFFGB.
In case of the screening of said films at events other than the Festival events, screening rights are subject to a separate contract concluded with the owner of the rights.
