Jon Dewar is a Canadian (New Brunswick) producer, writer, editor, and director of independent short films and works as a freelance documentary filmmaker for the University of New Brunswick. He began making and studying films in 2012 and has been involved in numerous projects since.
His 2014 short film Hypothermia, which he wrote, directed, edited, and co-sound designed, is currently making an impact on the film festival circuit, having been accepted into 17 festivals across North America thus far. The film received Best Picture at the Tottering Biped Film Festival, the Award of Excellence for Canadian Film at the Canada International Film Festival, Best Cinematography at the Tampa Bay Underground Film Festival, and an Honorable Mention in International Film at the Short Sweet Film Festival.
The Beautifully Drowned, Jon's next short film, is currently in pre-production and scheduled to shoot in early Spring. The film was awarded the Arts NB - Creation C grant as well as the 2015 New Brunswick Short Film Venture grant.
Jon was the producer and editor of the 2015 short film Choke Hold. The project is currently in post-production.
The 2015 short film Aidos is currently screening at film festivals. Jon worked on the project as producer and editor.
Jon worked as producer and director of photography for the 2015 short film "a list". The project is currently in post production.
Jon was the co-editor on the 2014 short film Zack & Luc. He was nominated for Best Editing at the Silver Wave Film Festival.
In 2013, Jon was awarded Excellence in Picture Editing for the short film Mirage at the Silver Wave Film Festival. He was also the writer and director of the film.
Jon has been a regular participant of Fredericton’s 48 Hour Film Competition for the past 4 years where he has won Best Director on three occasions (Pesticide, Severance, Ricochet) and Best Editing twice (Miscreation, Ricochet).
Jon has been involved in the What’s Up Doc? student filmmaking program since 2013. This program focuses on participatory video in high school classrooms and allows students to make documentary films on social issues they find relevant and engaging.
Since 2012 Jon has been a regular contributor to the online magazine Numero Cinq, providing written introductions and analysis of short films.
