Alex Afshar is an independent movie director, living in Gothenburg, Sweden. He was born 1985 in Teheran. He started his movie career in 2005. Since then he has directed ten short films and two music videos, and has been involved in many other movie projects as lighting supervisor, cameraman and editor. In 2007 he got an award for his second short film "The beautiful flower" at his college for best film production. Recently he received an AWARD OF MERIT at The IndieFEST Film Awards 2015 for the short film The Living Forest in the US. Alex has made movies in different genres and styles. He has made poetic drama, comedy, thriller, mystery and criminal short films. Nonetheless, his main focus is in poetic and feel-good movies, just like his awarded one. In the year 2010 he was a cooperator in arranging an exhibition of the film history’s greatest cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, for the first time in Gothenburg and Scandinavia. In 2012 he started an association called "Film För Fred" (Movie for Peace) together with other young filmmakers in Gothenburg. They arranged an international film festival for independent filmmakers around the world. They called their festival "Gothenburg Indie Film Fest" and screened 65 movies from around the world during four days. Alex recently graduated the master program Curator for film and video at Gothenburg University (Valand Academy) in 2015.
Money and the capitalist system have dominated the movie industry for decades. This means that you have to work very fast to over produce a lot of movies to bring money to companies as much as it can and the goal after that is to produce even bigger movies than the previous movies to make even more money. The movies are getting bigger and bigger in scale, costs and visual effects. But what happens to the content and story of the movies? The only allowed movies for productions are the movies that bring a lot of monies . That's why we see a lot of Transformers, sequels of the old successful movies, explosion, scarry and even torture movies just because to make sure to get enough money. What are we going to do with all of those moneys?
That's why since 2007 I have started to make more poetic, calm and feel good movies because these unpopular movies are the most needed movie genre in our time. Today we have created a generation of audience that they don´t watch movies that are older than 5 years, or are black and white or doesn't have any visual effects and high speed action. My latest movie "The living forest" is trying to give another point of view of the world and make my audience to calm down and just relaxing watching the movie and feel good afterwards.
