Director Statement

On making “1995”, Melnick says, “I approach every project I direct with a shared lens. I bring my personal pain to every story I tell and find my voice through sharing with others. Film is connection. When Onry brought me this beautiful song, I knew immediately that I wanted to direct a video that would capture the power of his resiliency. Through collaboration and shared vulnerability, we developed an intimate journey that transcends time and identity, a call to his ancestors. It’s about needing to be heard, feeling relentlessly attacked, but most importantly it's about building up and fighting back, with the help of the spirits who already have.”
