Rene Rhi grew up in the sister cities of Matamoros, Tamaulipas and Brownsville, Texas. After graduating from The University of Texas at Austin with degrees in Journalism and Spanish in 2000, he joined the Cross Border Institute for Regional Development (CBIRD) where he was involved in economic policy and sustainable business development along the US-Mexico border. Rene returned to the University of Texas to pursue a Masters in Media Studies in 2006. While at UT, his interest focused on New Media and Communication Law and Policy, Digital Consumer Behavior and US Latinos and the Media culminating in a 65 page thesis report entitled “An Interactive Model; Creating and Evaluating Film and Television Content for Minorities in the United States”.
In 2007, he became the youngest ever director of CineFestival San Antonio, the oldest Latin film festival in the US. Through partnerships he forged within the South Texas film community, Rene was awarded the National Scholarship for Hispanics in the Arts in 2008 and enrolled in the MFA film program at the University of Southern California. While at USC, he founded the Latino Film Association and focused in Motion Picture Production, Finance, Sales and Distribution. After graduating in 2011, he worked for the American Film Market and Celsius Entertainment; a London based content sales agency., where he was involved in the International distribution, acquisitions and financing of independent films.
Now based in both LA and Austin, Rene has spent the last two years working as a location manager, line producer and producer for independent films.
