Archita Mandal was born in Calcutta, India, grew up in Kuwait, and later moved to Canada for the final years of her undergraduate studies. She currently lives in the bay area. Aside from her technical background, she was drawn to involvement in independent movie-making in Silicon Valley. Film gives her a powerful platform upon which to exercise her talents in storytelling and visual arts. She has worked on several short films in different capacities, from script writer, art director, set design, choreography, and most recently director. She has taken script writing classes from San Francisco School of Digital Filmmaking. Archita’s directorial debut, Untread, is a science fiction thriller set in the near future and is being screened at the upcoming Women’s International Film & Arts Festival, 2015. Her next project is a music video, with a social message, featuring an original score.
Untread is a dynamic imbalance play of chess between characters with shades of grey. There is frustration, confusion and chaos that engulfs a young man's life. Untread also treads in to the territory of a futuristic era, where computer holograms are a reality, smart watches are in use and technology is everywhere. This is shown in a subtle way in the short. Untread is also about asking a very important question, that when snap decisions are made, you live with monsters you created; and how far can you go to retain your sanity. The making of this movie has been absolute joy with an amazingly talented cast and crew. Hopefully we have made a short film that sticks and intrigues people so that they feel entertained, yet we are evaluating a socially conscious message. How deep into man’s soul can technology advance and will we be the better for it?
