Sarra Hussein Idris is a Sudanese director, editor and visual artist based in New York.
Adam & Howa is Sarra's first narrative short film that she wrote, directed and edited. The film was funded through Kickstarter in 2014 and shot in Khartoum, Sudan with a Sudanese cast and crew.
As a visual artist, her work explores issues of identity, transcendence and intimacy.
She holds an MFA in Photography and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts and a BFA from Wellesley College. Her video art piece "Land of the Blacks" was recently part of an exhibit titled Global Positioning System (So You Say You Want a Revolution) at the West Side Gallery in Manhattan.
As an editor Sarra has worked with a variety of clients that include Twitter, Saturday Night Live, BBC America, and ATT to name a few.
Sarra maintains a strong connection with emerging visual and music artists in Sudan and the diaspora.
She taught Final Cut Pro workshops in Atbara and Khartoum as part of a 'Cultural Healing' program with Concordis International in 2012 and was an Artist in Residence at the Rashid Diab Arts Centre in Khartoum in 2010, where she taught a digital photography workshop and curated a photography exhibit.
Adam & Howa is truly a labor of love. We were funded by Kickstarter and determined to use a Sudanese cast and crew, even if it meant casting family members and dodging secret police (at times unsuccessfully). It is small in scope but I believe it is part of a new movement of Sudanese film making that I hope picks up momentum.
Sudan has come to symbolize crisis.
However, there are many stories to be told and points of view to be discovered. I wanted to offer a different portrayal of Sudan to the cultural discourse. Being Sudanese means vastly different things to different people. We all need to make peace within ourselves of the complexity of who we are, I believe seeing the spectrum of our reflections will help.
