Another Way Out

Three generations of LGBT Canadians talk about their life journeys - being bullied, coming out, and coming into their own. Stark black and white visuals highlight these candid, eloquent self-portraits. Anna Gutmanis’ powerful song “Another Way Out” provides the soundtrack. Winner of the 2014 "Best Short Documentary" Award at QCinema Texas.

Director Biography - Simone Stock

Award-Winning Writer-Director Simone Stock earned an Honors BA from the University of Toronto. From there, it was on film sets in Toronto that Simone really cut her teeth working with numerous industry legends including Art Linson (FIGHT CLUB, HEAT), Liam Neeson (SCHINDLER’S LIST, STAR WARS-PHANTOM MENACE) and Anne Bancroft (THE GRADUATE). Putting her skills to work, Simone - with partner Misha Skoric - created internet sensation ‘Whassup Grandma’ garnering international attention and featured on ABC's - "Best Commercials You've Never Seen". Simone departed the commercial world for the doc world, partnering again with Skoric for hockey documentary ON FROZEN POND. Soon after she began work in television directing the highest rated episodes of YTV’s successful GHOST TRACKERS series. Travel and the feature film world lay ahead in collaboration with Roger Spottiswoode (TOMORROW NEVER DIES, THE 6TH DAY) to direct 2nd Unit on Genie Award winning SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL on location in Rwanda. Skoric was instrumental in her next project with Spotiswoode, Chow Yun Fat starrer THE CHILDREN OF HUANG SHI shot on location across China. Ms. Stock’s work GIRLFRIENDS was a 2013/2014 Selection of the Queer Ideas Screenplay Development Series and was featured in January at The Gladstone Hotel in Toronto for the Queer Ideas Salon.

Simone directed the short MOTOWN MORNING on location in Los Angeles, which successfully ran the festival circuit and garnered a Toronto International Film Festival nomination for Best Short in Canada. More recently Simone co-wrote and directed IRIS, which won the award for "Best Canadian Film" at the 2014 Muskoka Independent Film Festival. Soon afterward, her film ANOTHER WAY OUT was named "Best Short Documentary" at QCinema 2014.

Director Statement

I wanted the visuals to convey the emotional power of the song "Another Way Out" and its simplicity. Documentary seemed like the most logical fit, and with Anna's activist background an easy one too.
