Saif El-Douh is an Egyptian director and writer born in Sayyida Zeinab, Cairo, in 1999. After briefly attending the Faculty of Commerce at Ain Shams University, he left to pursue his passion for film at the Higher Institute of Cinema, where he is now in his fourth year majoring in directing. He began writing over five years ago, producing several screenplays and publishing his first story collection, *On the Edge of Death*, at the Cairo International Book Fair in 2022. Saif has directed two short films from the institute and worked as an assistant director on others, receiving practical training on the feature film *Journey 404*. His story *Friska* was shortlisted at the 2023 Creativity Festival.
Like any free artist seeking freedom in a country where there are none, I often ponder whether I should speak out or remain suppressed and restrained. This led me to the idea of creating a visual record of creators who have suffered from oppression and persecution by their governments because of their opinions or beliefs. I want the world to see that there are still artists who pursue their desires despite the terror and restrictions on their freedom. I made this film fully aware that it's a suicidal idea that could lead to my lifelong imprisonment. However, I chose to smile and not feel ashamed of myself when I stand in front of the mirror at night.
