Colin Barrett is the Director and Screenwriter of Bite Me!. Barrett is a sophomore Cinema and Photography major with an English minor. Hailing from, Weymouth, Massachusetts, some of his biggest accomplishments thus far are a short documentary film exploring the Boston Marathon Tragedy and a short narrative fiction piece based off of J.D. Salinger’s “The Perfect Day for Bananafish.” He is also member of the DKA Professional Cinematic Society-Pi Chapter at Ithaca College and a Film Analysis Tutor for a first-year film theory course, Introduction to Film Aesthetic and Analysis.
Looking for inspiration during a late night of watching Youtube videos and exploring the internet, I came across a old jazzercise video and Bite Me! was born. I was so infatuated with these old videos that are so aggressive and unbearably cheesy. The screams of “Oh God Yeah” or “Gag me with a spoon!”, everything just felt so vulgar. From that moment I started conceptualizing this story.
Firstly, I knew I wanted to make this a female driven film. Female driven films are a rarity in student films in my opinion so I wanted to highlight something of importance to me. It was also important to me that the woman would come out on top at the end of this film. I didn’t want to make the female’s journey cliche in anyway either. That’s where I came up with the idea of cannibalism. Although she would be tempted to kill her husband from the evil jazzercise dancers, I also wanted her to have her own agency.
I was nervous to pitch this idea to my class as it is a pretty violent and campy idea but I was happy with the result. First concern was to get a crew together for this wacky project. I wanted people to not only want to be proud of the project they are working on but I wanted them to be interested in the project itself. I wanted set to not be boring and just for a class, but a safe and fun environment that everyone would enjoy. Luckily with my amazing cast and crew I believe we got there.
I am so proud of this project and to be able to say I directed it. I'm so grateful for everyone who worked on it and can’t thank them enough. We all made our move with this film and I can’t imagine working on any other project this semester
