Spirit of the Rain

Synopsis:
In a remote area of the Amazon the last of the regal Blue Amazon macaws are losing members of their flock to pet trappers. Chico, aka “fluff-head,” waits for his 1st flying lesson with his dad but is told that he’s been captured by “Ground Demons.” On being swatted off his home branch by a cranky sloth, Chico “finds his wings” and sets out to find his dad. He crashes into a flirtatious female named Amor who takes him to meet the human, named Yako, who raised her. Yako is a wildlife biologist, and the last member of the Guardian Tribe, who in ancient times could send their prayers to the Spirit of the Rain via the spirit messengers, the Blue macaws.
Yako is dealing with the beautiful, but tightly would, government bureaucrat, named Carmen, who has come to shut down Yako’s research station to make way for a tourist trap. Amor arrives with Chico, who tells of the ground Demons taking the flock. As a Guardian, Yako understands, but Carmen hears only squawks. She’s intrigued. Yako, Amor and Chico hatch a plan to find the trapper camp and release the captives. Carmen wants to join them.
On the hunt Amor is captured, Chico enlists some unusual forest allies, two pygmy marmosets and a giant bird-eater spider. They find the trapper camp but discover that two of the trappers have gone to burn Chico’s island home to drive the remaining members of the flock into flying nets. Yako and Carmen go to stop the trappers, and Chico, and his crew, stay to release the captives from cages. They cleverly defeat the meanest of the trappers, by luring him into the giant spider’s web.
After releasing the captives, Chico’s Dad, Mom and others, they fly to the home island, but it’s ablaze. As the nets fly up to capture the flock Yako, flying an ultralight, flies into the net, saving the flock, but crashes into the river. Only calling the Spirit of the Rain could stop the fire, but the Last Guardian, Yako, is gone.
A glint from rocky promontory shines from a golden necklace worn by Carmen. It was stolen from the Guardian priests during the conquest. Chico convinces Carmen to become the new guardian and to call the Spirit of the Rain. She realizes this is the chance to redeem her family’s past. She prays from the heart. Chico leads the flock flight, chanting the prayer. Clouds gather, rain falls, putting out the flames, and lightning drives away the astonished trappers. Yako finds his way to shore and to Carmen, whose mind is forever changed. The flock celebrates, and Chico and Amor fly as the light shines on a new day.

I was born in Colombia, South America, and now live as a 3D computer animation artist in Silicon Valley, California. “Spirit of the Rain” comes from my love of the rainforest, its creatures, and of story and all that animation can bring. I hope that in reading the story some of that love rubs off on the reader.
